YouTube disclosed late Monday that it would substitute user IDs, Internet addresses and other identifiers before submitting the database to Viacom as required under a July 1 court order widely criticized by privacy activists.

Viacom wants to know which videos YouTube employees have watched and uploaded to the site, and Google is refusing to provide that information.

Last week, in the context of Viacom's $1 billion copyright suit against Google's YouTube, U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton ordered Google to turn over to Viacom its records of which users watched which videos on YouTube.
