Just over a year since the choose-what-you pay digital release of Radiohead’s seventh album, ‘In Rainbows’, statistics unveiled over the weekend have revealed that the unconventional release of the record was an unmitigated success for the band.
Sales figures of Radiohead's bold pay-what-you-want distribution release of "In Rainbows" have often been speculated upon, but never confirmed... until now.
...In no rush to do it again though
Radiohead sold more than three million copies of its In Rainbows album, with 1.75 million of those being CDs, despite the band's innovative 'pay-what-you-want' digital promotion. The band also sold 100,000 $80 discboxes from their website, too. It's the first time they've revealed how many copies In Rainbows sold.
In Rainbows, as a title, implies a sense of comfort and delightfulness. Symbolically, rainbows are more likely to be associated with kittens and warm blankets than the grim and glum circumstances Radiohead is known for soundtracking. There's a slight, if expected, twist at play.
